Alex looked up at the giant fire being and frowned.

How was he supposed to fight something that could burn him alive? He glanced at the creature’s nameplate. It said Demonic Fire Elemental. Not a lot of help, but at least it wasn’t a full-on boss monster. Bosses got real names, but mini-bosses weren’t always on the receiving end of the developer’s good graces. It could also be an elite version of an elemental. Adding the demonic moniker gave the creature extra street cred.

There was nothing to do but try to hit the elemental. He was a tank. He had to trust the game knew normal human skin couldn’t handle punching a fire elemental in the face. Going along that logic line, it made sense there would be some built-in protections. They didn’t save his leg from being chopped off, but this was different.

There might be fights where he couldn’t use his primary weapon as a tank. To find out, he would have to step into the fire.

He shrugged. “In the words of Dillon Francis, ‘There ain’t nothing to it but to do it.’”

With the decision made, Alex charged forward. He slammed his fist into the center of the elemental. It connected the same way it always did. The elemental’s flesh was slightly squishier than normal. Alex had to work to pull his hand back before he could punch the creature again.

Intense heat radiated off the monster, but it wasn’t burning him alive. Instead, the fire slowly ticked away at his health points. While he didn’t feel the flames now, the burns would be more severe as his health dropped. Much like his shotgun didn’t blast a boss monster to bits.

It was kind of cool. Alex was punching a creature of pure fire, and it wasn’t killing him instantly. The stifling heat was worse than going outside during the hundred-and-twenty-degree summers. It pressed on him, made it hard to breathe. So, the effects of the demonic elemental were more than the flames.

The heat it gave off made him feel like he was fighting in a sauna. Sweat poured off him. His clothes stuck to him. Was it funny that he was already thinking about taking another shower? Back in the real world, his body wasn’t dirty, but inside the game, he felt like his first morning mowing grass.

Alex thought he was going to die.

In this case, he could do more than stand in the flames like some kind of noob. In fact, his job demanded it. He was so impressed when his fists didn’t incinerate on contact that he forgot to do the work a tank was required to do.

He reached down to his knees and drove a massive uppercut into the elemental. The beast roared at him. He ducked a flaming fist and started turning the monster around. The group behind their demonic friend could get to work. For the first time, Alex felt like he had the fight under control.

The demonic elemental was getting pissed. It couldn’t hit him, and he kept punching it.
